 TRANSITIONING TO HST

Ahead of its implementation of a new Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) in Ontario, coming into effect on July 1, 2010, the Provincial Government has issued a notice titled General Transitional Rules for Ontario HST. The rules would help consumers and businesses transition to the HST.

The notice also addresses common business concerns about the change to a new sales tax system, such as: what do businesses have to do right now to get ready, will the government provide businesses with assistance to transition to the HST, and will your business have to register to collect the proposed HST?

 ONTARIO FALL ECONOMIC STATEMENT

"RECORD DEFICIT REINFORCES NEED FOR PRUDENT PLAN"

CREDIT: Peter J. Thompson, National Post

As the leading business organization in Ontario, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) urges the provincial government to develop a comprehensive and practical plan to eliminate the provincial deficit in as reasonable a timeframe as possible, while remaining resolute in the direction it has set for comprehensive tax reform.

The OCC commended the government’s plan for a comprehensive review of public expenditures and also recommended the deficit reduction plan adopt a number of principles, including the establishment of firm expenditure targets.

The OCC, as well as other chambers of commerce, have accepted a deficit for the purpose of stimulus spending as long as there is a practical plan to eliminate it.

ONTARIO CHAMBER COMMENTS ON BUILT ENVIRONMENT STANDARDS

The OCC noted its strong support to the Minister of Community and Social Services for not including retrofit and private dwellings into the proposed Built Environment Standard released in October.

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) is aimed at making Ontario the most accessible province by 2025, and will dictate, among other things, how existing buildings must be renovated or retrofitted, to name a few.

The OCC recently authored a submission to government with recommendations pertaining to the scope, time, and high financial cost of compliance with the proposed Built Environment standards.
