INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FOCUS GROUP SESSION

Windsor is one of the first municipalities in Ontario to execute the Local Immigration Partnership (LIP) initiative. LIP is an initiative of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) in partnership with Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration (MCI). LIP will provide a collaborative framework for, and facilitate the development and implementation of sustainable local and regional solutions for the successful integration of immigrants to Ontario. The Goals of the LIP initiative are:

  • To improve access to, and coordination of, immigrant integration services;

  • To improve labour market outcomes for immigrants. This may include initiatives such as engagement of local employers, mentorship initiatives, coordination of local employment services and non-paid internships;
  • To strengthen local awareness and capacity to integrate immigrants.

The LIP initiative is administered through the Department of Social and Health Services, City of Windsor. A Partnership Council with a diverse range of relevant stakeholders including Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce was established.

A focus group session is scheduled on July 31st (10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) to hear the opinions of all stakeholders about the employment challenges facing immigrants to Windsor and Essex County and their perceptions of how those challenges can be addressed by the overall community.  The focus group meeting will be held at the Board Room of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce. You are invited and encouraged to attend the session.

Please confirm your participation to Mary Ellen Bernard (Project Manager) using email mbernard@city.windsor.on.ca.

WIND TURBINE REGULATIONS RESTRICTIVE FOR BUSINESS

On July 20, 2009 the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce sent a letter to John Gerretsen, Ontario Minister of the Environment regarding a recent call for input on proposed new wind turbine regulations.

The Chamber welcomed the effort by the Ministry regarding the implementation of the Green Energy Act but also expressed concerns with the proposed wind turbine setbacks.

Otherwise the standards as proposed would curtail investment jeopardizing the already planned wind turbine projects.

IMPROVING U.S. – CANADIAN BORDER KEY TO REGION’S ECONOMIC SUCCESS

The Detroit Regional Chamber, along with the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program, unveiled a new report that provides a detailed framework for enhancing operations and trade at the border crossings between the U.S. and Canada.

The findings include specific border policy recommendations for President Barak Obama and Prime Minister Stephen Harper to consider as they work toward strengthening bilateral economic and security ties.

The report, titled “Toward a New Frontier: Improving the U.S. Canadian Border,” offers a blueprint for both governments to accelerate commerce and spur innovation while ensuring a safe border.
